My Favourite Things SpinOff : Anti Consumerism

The "My Favorite Things" genre usually revolves around listing beloved products and subtly nudging readers towards purchasing them. But in our hyper-consumer world, do we really need more stuff? I'm taking a different approach. I want to share my favorite things to give – things that enrich lives without emptying wallets. Join me on a journey of decluttering and giving back!

We're constantly bombarded with messages to buy, buy, buy. But what if we shifted our focus from consumption to contribution? What if, instead of accumulating more possessions, we focused on giving more of ourselves? This list isn't about what you can buy; it's about what you can give to make a real difference.

1. Time: The Most Precious Gift

In a world obsessed with instant gratification, time is the ultimate luxury. Offer your time to a teenager or young adult as a mentor. Share your wisdom, experience, and guidance. You might be surprised at the impact you can have. Think about the skills or knowledge you have that could benefit someone else. Could you help a young person navigate college applications, learn a new trade, or simply offer a listening ear?

2. Encouragement: Free, Yet Priceless

Support doesn't always require a financial sacrifice. A word of encouragement, freely given, can be incredibly powerful. Even better? A handwritten letter. In a digital age, a tangible expression of care is truly special. Think about someone in your life who could use a boost. A simple "I believe in you" can make all the difference.

3. A Thinking-of-You Message

A quick text or phone call to let someone know you're thinking of them and praying for them can brighten their day. It's a small gesture that speaks volumes about your care and concern. In our busy lives, it's easy to lose touch. Make a conscious effort to reach out and connect.

4. Prayer: Intercesion

Engage in your spiritual practice, whatever that may be. If you have a spiritual discipline, practice it. Prayer, meditation, or reflection can be a powerful way to intercede for someone.

5. A Smile: The Universal Language

A smile needs no explanation. It's a simple yet powerful way to spread joy and kindness. It costs nothing, yet it can brighten someone's day immeasurably. Make a conscious effort to smile at the people you encounter throughout your day.

6. A Kind Gesture: An Act of Respect

A kind gesture that shows respect towards another person can be as simple as holding the door open, offering your seat, or listening attentively. It's about recognizing the humanity in others and treating them with dignity. I recently watched a Josh Johnson comedy special where he talked about missing the art of just sitting with a friend without technology (phone) and just enjoying the art of being present.

7. A Sacrifice: Giving Something That Matters

A gesture that costs you something – that takes a sacrifice – carries extra weight. It shows that you're willing to go the extra mile for someone else.

8. A Meal: Cooking Is A Life Saving Skill

Sharing a meal is a powerful way to connect with others and show your care. Whether you invite someone over for dinner or deliver a meal to someone in need, the act of sharing food is a gesture of love and generosity.

9. Teach a Skill: Empowering Others

Share your knowledge and skills with someone who can't afford lessons. This is a truly empowering gift that can help someone improve their life and achieve their goals. Think about what you're good at. Could you teach someone to play an instrument, learn a new language, or develop a valuable skill?

Giving isn't just about donating money; it's about sharing your time, your talents, and your heart. It's about creating connections and making a difference in the lives of others.
