Excusez-moi, Madame [CAMEROON JUNE 2015]

CAMEROON 2015

As I try to settle in and meetup with work deadlines, memories of Cameroon keep replaying in my mind. Since this was a private family trip, I will not be posting pictures of my time in the country.
However I will speak on one of the many colorful experiences I had.

I was called FAT, every single day not just by family and friends who had not seen me in a long time but by complete strangers.

Each time the word was used to reference me, I cringed a little inside but smiled on the outside. This was a case of cultural differences.

In the US, the word FAT always reflects negative connotations in terms of a woman's beauty. In Cameroon, my size earned me the respect of the community because it marked the difference between a young girl and a woman. I was called Madame and "Aunty" because of my size. It was a way of acknowledging my womanhood while my skinnier peers where thought of as little girls and not necessarily given the same respect.

As much as I understood this cultural perspective, my western brainwashed sense of how a woman should look could not reconcile how I was called and treated. I felt honoured to be among people who embrace "thickness" but the american in me still wished I was as skinny and petite as my cousins.

So how did I deal with this?

I hit the gym ASAP once back in the united states. lol. I know this isnt the right response.

I should embrace my curves but I sincerely believe my curves have gone out of hand and need regulation.

I should come to realize that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and holds different meanings in different countries. I do sincerely understand that.

But my reality is....I live in the USA. So unfortunately I have to live according to the norms of this society . From a professional development standpoint, especially for someone who works in the Exercise and wellness industry, how I look can greatly affect my marketability.

My weight loss and healthy lifestyle journey is meant for a lifetime.

All I can do is try daily, to honour my body by making healthy choices.

June Favorite : Planking and Ada Ari Fitness

I'm loving this 31 days of planking challenge on SHAPE Magazine and I am going to take it on as my June Fitness challenge .
However I will not be able to take pictures daily but will hopefully take a few over the course of the month.

It was posted on their website in May but that's okay.
We can still use if for this month.

AdaAri Fitness
As a lover of African music and fitness, her workout videos are the perfect combination for someone like me.

Check her out on Youtube, if only to try something new and fun.

What health and Wellness challenge are you doing?

It could be a new gym class, diet, cleanse or exercise routine.

Spring showers lead to 2 piece beach wear body

As much as I want to be shocked and disappointed at my lack of blog posts in May, in the grande scheme of things am ok with it.

The over sharing culture of social media has made me loose taste in a lot, including blogging. I want to be the girl who doesn't have a clue on the fickle things going on around me because am too busy enjoying life and immersing in the experiences.

                                                Globe trotters

May has been a WILD and EXCITING month and I can't wait to continue the adventures in June.

Where this a travel blog, it would have been filled with daily posts of my travels and justifications for falling off the "healthy habits" lifestyle.
Location: American Legion, Cambridge

Like most people on vacation "out of town",  healthy habit rules are thrown out of the window when you travel.

                                 Location: Rhode Island
From pigging out at quirky restaurants, to sleepless nightlife escapades, I have put on 15+ lbs from being on the road for the most part of MAY.

                                                 Location: Dallas, Texas
My goal for June and before my next trip in July, is to lose that 15lbs and look justifiably good in a 2 piece swim suit.

Location: Back packing & camping at the Cardigan Mountains, New Hampshire

Unlike last year which had me doing outdoor yoga daily, this year's allergies season has wrecked havoc on my health. I will be doing 90% of my work outs in the gym with emphasis on the elliptical machines. My goal is to tone my quads, thighs, and gluts.

Lastly, I am learning to live in the moment and to value quality over quantity. I am working less and making sure my weekends are work free. I am also learning to understand the value of my academic accomplishments and work experience skills sets to negotiate favorable salaries.
